The Little Girl

My daughter was 4 years old when she began to have, what we thought an imaginary friend. Every time she would do something she knew she wasn’t suppose too, she would blame it on her friend April. This was when her younger brother wasn’t old enough to play so she mostly played by herself since we didn’t live around to many kids of her own age. Our back yard was completely fenced in, and she had her swing and all that stuff out there, since it was fenced in I would let her play outside by herself checking on her occasionally as I would do my house work through the day. She would always be outside pushing her swing like she was swinging someone, she would talk to this little girl named April for the longest time.

I got worried about her and confided in my husband’s grand mother that had been born and raised in that area and what she told me gave me chills. She said that back in the early 20’s a family lived where we did and had 3 children 2 girls and one boy. The youngest child was only 4 years old at the time, she had been outside playing in a old barn that was on the property. She was in the loft playing when she accidentally fell through the boards and fell and broke her neck. Dying a short time after that. The little girl’s name was April.

The Last Stop

The Last Stop
22 Mine Road / Missy Adkins

This is not an encounter that I have had but more a story that has been passed through the years. I’m sure every body has heard the mysterious tale of Mamie Thurman, her brutal death, and the man who was paid to take the blame for it. As we all know she is said to walk about 22 HOLDEN every night in search of her true killer, and more importantly justice.

This little tale revolves around that. The small town of Logan, WV was booming with business, the coal mines were at their peek, so of course almost everyone worked in the mines in one form or another. With this booming business came transportation, thus there was a bus-stop at every corner on every road and every holler. There was one bus in particular, the bus that ran for the hoot owl shift on 22 Holden. This bus was like any other, until the night of the death of Mamie Thurman.

Weird events started to happen after that. The two men who had gotten off the bus at the last stop had went to another shift, the bus would still have to go that far through to be able to turn because of it’s size. Well one night the bus driver looked up as he was just minutes from his turning point and saw a lovely young woman in the far back of the bus. He scratched his head thinking to himself “how could I have missed her, I need a vacation”. He looked up at the young woman once more and smiled, which she politely smiled back.

When he reached his turning point at the end of this narrow road she pulled the cord to signal her stop. The driver was curious about this beautiful lady who was out so late at night. So with a smile he opened the door and raised his head as if to inquire on her situation, but to his surprise there was no beautiful woman leaving the bus. She had disappeared, just as queerly as she had came. By this time the driver had convinced himself that he was mad, but he had to check the bus one final time. With his knees quaking beneath him he slowly made his way to the back of the bus where he did find evidence of the mysterious creature, the seat was soaking wet just as the young lady was who had sat in the seat.

The same reenactment went on for weeks and the driver had become accustomed to her presence. His friend’s made awful fun at him when he told the story of his last stop, he was even threatened to be fired if the obscured lies did not stop, and he was, and so was the next man who ran that run. The men managed to convince their former boss to give them one more chance, they could prove it to him, which they did that also and were given their jobs back on one condition, that they would never speak of this strange happening again as long as the bus still ran. The men kept their secret for a long time, but business got bad in little old Logan, it wasn’t booming any more, it was barely alive, the buses stopped running and the stories kind of died for a while.

My grandmother “rest her soul” had told me this and other legends when I was a child. 22 Holden is connected to a 4 lane now, and I will tell you something odd that I would swear my own life against. You can pull your car off the road, like your going to enter 22 Holden, and it will pull your car up the hill, not far, but it is up hill, and you can actually watch your car being pulled up the hill, rolling right up it on its own. I don’t know if it’s an odd coincidence or if it’s Mamie Thurman telling you that if she can’t leave, neither can you.

Dancing Lights

My father had always told me about these “lights” that dance whenever someone dies. They start in the family graveyard, go up in the field and then back to the graveyard. Only a few people in the family had seen this. On March 23, 1998 my father died. My sister flew into Virginia to make the drive with me to Heaters, WV (about 8 hrs).

We were of course going to the homestead, which has been in the family for over 200 years and where my dad was living. We started up the mountain around midnight and low and behold, as soon as we arrived at the top there were the lights. There is nothing around so no way were there interference with them. In the center was a red light and a green light and on each side of them were two white lights. They were dancing all around the field and were starting to go to the graveyard.

We stayed up until around 2:00am and watched until the last one started going down. The next night my other two sisters arrived from NM and again the lights were dancing. We were all crying because if was as if they were “welcoming” dad.

Thursday night was the night for the wake and when the grave was opened (yes dad was buried in the old graveyard). We had told everyone in the family that the lights were dancing and after the wake the WHOLE family went back to the farm to watch. This time it was 2 red lights in the center and 3 white lights on each side. My uncle (dad’s brother) kept asking if one of the lights had left for the other field… well they hadn’t until that night. All of a sudden one of the red lights took off and shot across the sky and disappeared behind the next hill. We felt the second red light was dad, because he had red hair. I know it might sound silly but instead of being scared of these lights it was comforting to think that it was dad and he was being welcomed by our ancestors.

The Knocking

I pulled into my friend’s driveway at 3:00am one morning, he was asleep and I seen that his window was wide-open upstairs. I started throwing rocks and clumps of mud into his window to wake him up.

Across the road is an old abandoned miners house that is rotting away. As I was throwing the rocks I heard some pounding noises like a nail being hammered into a board. The noises would do that a couple of times and then it would change into a much higher screeching noise, like pulling nails out of boards. They were coming directly from the old building.

I don’t know if something happened on this night in the past years of this building, but the ghosts were haunting it and I know for sure that they weren’t happy.

I can remember this as if it were just yesterday. My aunt and uncle called begging mom and dad to bring us boys and come spend the night with them. They lived up on West Fork of Harts Creek. They didn’t have any children and they said they really got lonely. Mom said on day that we would go spend the night. That night after dad got home from work mom packed up a bag and my uncle came to get us. Mom said sis probably wants me to clean her house.

We spent the evening just setting around talking and had a nice supper. When it came bed time they both insisted on us sleeping in their bed room and they would sleep in the living room. Mom pulled back the bed covers and put us boys in middle. She and dad turned off the lights and lay beside us. Just about the time we started to go to sleep we heard the closet door squeak and it flew open. We heard a scuffing sound like someone with house slippers was coming towards the bed. Then the corner of the bed at the bottom sank down. Dad jumped up and turned on the light. The closet door was wide open. He shut it and turned a big 3 inch wood lock on it. He lay back down turned off the light and all night long it kept doing the same thing. Morning came and we were all worn out. Mom said; don’t say a word about this to your aunt and uncle.

First thing they asked at breakfast was how did you sleep last night? Dad and mom both spoke up saying just fine. They insisted that we please spend one more night and that they would take us home the next day. When it came bed time again they insisted on us sleeping in that room again. Dad tied a string to the light and tied it to the bed post. He made sure the lock was locked and turned out the lights. All night long it did the same stuff. Just as soon as he pulled on the light the indention on the bed was gone and nothing could be seen.

Next morning same question was asked. This time mom just dropped her head on the table and said we are killed. We haven’t had a winks sleep in two nights. That’s all we wanted to hear they said. We cannot sleep in that room. There is a haunt in there… which is ghost. We just thought we were going crazy. Now we know it’s really haunted.

After mom calmed down from wanting to whip her sister, they got to talking about the room. My aunt and uncle started discussing stuff that was in the closet. Uncle had been in Siapan during the war. For a souvenir he had brought back a Japanese Sword and a belt and pair of Japanese shoes. The looked like flip flops. He had them in the smoke house but, had brought them in back in the spring because the smoke house was leaking really badly. Get them out of here today. She said bury them up on the hill. He said, “No I can’t.” He told us the story how he was in a man hole and he heard the enemy coming toward him. All the military were ordered to stay in their man holes and if they heard someone it was an enemy and to fire. He said the next morning he found the enemy dead he had shot him and killed him. He took his money and belt with bullet holes in it and the shoes and Japanese sword as a souvenir.

He took it, put in a box and buried it some where on the hill behind their house.

No one ever mentioned hearing anything else again. Poor ole uncle he was relieved but, then till the day he died he was scared of haunts.

In my other submissions to this site, I have mentioned West Virginian spirits or “ghosts” that seem to follow me around the country. This, too, is one of those instances.

In 1989, my daughter was on her way to the hospital to deliver a baby boy, in hard labor. It was after dark in December. Her husband had just stopped at a stop sign at an intersection and as he started through, my daughter heard my mother, her grandmother say in a very sharp voice, “V_____, get your head up!”

My daughter immediately jerked her head off the passenger side window, just as a 16 year old driver ran the stop sign and hit their car on her side. My daughter made the rest of the trip to the hospital in an ambulance, and promptly delivered a baby boy. We have always known it was her Grandmother because only my mother called her that particular version of her first name.

We have since referred to the child born that winter night as “Grandma’s special delivery”. We know she saved my daughter’s life, even though she died in 1983 in Parkersburg, West Virginia.

White Thing

It was mid-January in Four States, West Virginia and I was walking through the woods. I heard something rustling in the brush about 100 yards away. I walked up a right-of-way to see what it was. I wish I‘d stayed home.

As I topped the right-of-way, what appeared to be a large white bear was walking along the ridge line. I stopped dead in my tracks at the sight of it. I moved over the hill and was about 50 yards from the beast. I crouched down and watched it for two or three minutes. I then tried to work my way down the hill and back to my house. Well, when I stood up the beast saw me and stood up on its hind legs and ran off the top of the ridge into the woods. I’ve never saw it again. I don’t really know what this thing is and would really like to find out. I’ve had friends tell me I’m crazy, others tell me it was just an albino bear, but I know better it was like nothing I had ever seen in my life.

Rt. 35 toward Winfield / Google Maps

My husband and I were taking a drive one night down Route 35 going toward Winfield. We had just gotten to where there were no lights or houses around. I was looking out my window trying not to be scared of what I might see.

Joe (my husband) had said something and as I turned my head to answer him, I looked ahead and saw something. About 50 yards ahead of us was something in the road. It was on all fours and was snow white. It was bigger than a dog, way bigger. As we got closer it turned and looked our way. Its mouth opened and it stood up on two legs and began running across the road and up through the woods.

I never said a thing. All I could do was sit there, stunned. A few minutes later Joe asked if I had seen what he had seen. Unable to answer him, I began to cry. Wanting to go home we decided to cross the bridge and go through Poca home. Neither of us wanted to go back the way we came.

What In The World Is It?

What In The World Is It?
Chief Logan State Park Sign / loganwv.us

One night back in 1999 I was at Chief Logan State Park all by myself, there was no one else up there. When I was getting ready to leave, I heard something scream, but it sounded like a very high pitch, a screech, but very intense.

It sounded like no animal IN THIS WORLD and no person could have made such a loud, horrifying sound. When I heard it, I thought to myself, what in the world is that? I swear i was on no drugs or alcohol, and I still have never heard anything as chilling as that.

One evening I met a couple of friends up there, and one of them started talking about how they had one evening broke down up there and had to walk to the payphone at the other end of the park. By the time my friend had got to the payphone, it was dark. He then went on to say that on his way to that phone he had heard a scream, and then went on to describe it as the way I just did.

I hadn’t told him what I heard or anything about my experience until after he was finished with his.

I am 14 years old, this is a story that my brother told me, he is 27, and I am sure he would not lie about this. He delivers mine supplies for Belo Mine Supply in Belo, WV, which is close to Delbarton, Varney, and Ragland.

He was delivering mine supplies to Boone County one night, and he said he got lost, and he went down this old country back road, he was going to stop somewhere and try to get directions. He said he just kept going and going out this road, he saw a woman walking beside the road, and this was around 10:00 pm. She kept her back to him, until he pulled up beside her.

He rolled his window down to talk to her, she turned around towards him, and he said that her face had paintings and markings on it. He just slammed the gas pedal to the floor, and just kept going out that road and he came out somewhere in Boone County. I am sure he would not lie about this he was so scared.

What Followed Me?

What Followed Me?

In the 1950’s I often went to my relative’s in Wirt County to visit on the week-ends. The procedure was to drop them a post-card early in the week saying I would take the Greyhound bus to the stop where they picked me up.

I did exactly that one week or so before Thanksgiving in the early 50’s. When the bus dropped me off, it was almost dark, and there were no familiar faces waiting for me.

I just thought I would walk towards the direction I knew they would be driving, as I knew the road well.

I passed all the houses I knew families, and it got darker and darker, no sign of my aunt or uncle.

As I got farther and farther into the “holler” I heard something start following me, off to the right. When I stopped to listen, it stopped. I began to get a little scared.

I kept trekking and started singing every song I knew because I was now trying to stay in the middle of the dirt road and just get to my relative’s house.

I came to the old West house and decided to stop and ask for help. Well, Mrs. West nearly had a heart attack when she opened her door to my knock.

She drug me inside and said “lord, child, what are you doing out here at this time of night?” I explained why I was there and insisted I was walking the rest of the way down the “holler” and all I wanted was a flash-light.

Against her better judgment, she gave me an old, rickety flashlight and I set off again. The minute I got back on the dirt road, so did whatever was following me. It kept to the right side of the road again.

I made it to my Aunt’s house and every dog they owned came bounding out to bark at me, and whatever was following me bounded up the side of the holler.

I never got so much fussing at in my life from my relatives and eventually my mother in Parkersburg. I was told there were all kinds of wildlife out there and it could have been a wildcat or a bear and ate me!

Turns out my Aunt never received my card saying I was coming that week-end. Also, that week-end visit turned into the Thanksgiving blizzard of the century in WV! We were snow-bound for several days!

I don’t know what followed me, but, it scared a little 11 year old girl and gave my family something to talk about for a very long time!

In 1994 I visited that part of Wirt County and remembered the long trek I took that night and thought about what might have been following me. Who knows? I don’t.

Weird Sounds

Weird Sounds
Chapman Branch / Google Maps

I am now 18 years old and live in Minnesota, but I lived most of my life in a little holler called Chapman Branch, located on North Fork Road just outside of the town of Chapmansville. I was about 17 when this occurred. It was early fall, around the first week of squirrel season. It was about noon and I was walking through the woods just beyond my uncle’s house when I heard a strange noise like a low growl coming from the under brush about 100 yards ahead of me, around a curve in the hillside. It stated out as a low growling noise, but then it got louder and the pitch got higher. It got so high that it was like a scream but much louder. I’ve heard panthers, bears, and just about every other kind of animal in those woods, but this was like nothing I’ve ever heard before.

I was so frightened. I clenched the grip of the 12 gauge shotgun I had so tightly that I thought it would break. I could think of nothing but to get ready to shoot if anything came around that hill. I stepped about two feet over the side of the road and put my back to a tree to keep myself standing. I watched the bend in the hillside for about thirty seconds that’s all the time it took me to decide to get the heck out of there. I slowly stepped back onto the road and began to ease my way back down the road toward my uncle’s house, with the thing, whatever it was, still screeching like crazy.

When I got about 20 feet from were I had been standing when I first heard the thing, I took off in a dead sprint right past my uncle’s house toward my grandmother’s house which was on down the holler. My uncle met me halfway there on his horse. He jumped off his horse grabbed me and asked what had happened. I told him what I had heard and he said it was probably a bear. I agreed with him, not wanting him to think I was nuts. But neither my uncle nor I went into the woods for the rest of that day. Even now, living here in Minnesota, when I’m in the woods alone, I never feel really alone.
