The Moving Head

My grandmother died 3 years ago in her house in Delbarton, WV. One night my friend Kala and I were staying at that house which my grandfather still lives in. We were in the living room laying down talking on the couches before we fell asleep. My grandmother had bought these heads before she died. They were like statues. They were white and it was a man’s face. It is somewhat famous. I had never liked them. They frightened me. Therefore, when Kala and I were lying down, I got up and turned the head around because it was facing me. Afterward, I did not think anything about it, I was talking to Kala, I looked at the head, and it was facing me again. I freaked. Therefore, Kala and I went into the other living room and finally fell asleep a little past sunrise.

Maybe my grandmother moved them trying to tell me she was there. Who knows? However, every time I stay at that house I end up calling my mother to come get me. I have been terrified ever since.

The House On Sammy Street

I was best friends with the three who rented out “The House”, as we referred to it. Even though I technically lived in North Tower at Concord, I found myself staying at 137 Sammy Street every weekend, as well as a few weekdays here and there. I had heard rumors of it being haunted, but from the end of August until late October, I hadn’t personally experienced any “weird” happenings, and even that was when I was almost asleep in the bedroom and I heard my best guy friend (now my fiance) and a few of our other friends telling the front door in the adjacent living room to stop opening and closing on it’s own. Somehow I didn’t care so much about that, perhaps it was because I was nearly asleep at that point, or maybe it was because there were so many other people in the house that I wasn’t worried about anything really scary happening.

Nothing really scary happened for a while. In January, I was one of two people in the house, killing time while the other two residents were at work. It was snowing outside, so I was prepared to camp out for the night instead of brave Athens Road. I was on the phone with a good friend, when all of a sudden my phone goes dead. This had happened before, thanks to my battery going dead because I had talked for so long on it. I assumed this was the case in this situation, but when I looked at my phone, it had a full charge on it. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but now when I think about it, it’s probably not a coincidence that my phone would work in certain areas of the house at that point (such as the kitchen) and not work in others (the living room and the bedroom which I had started out in).

The “weirdest” and “scariest” thing that I ever experience in “The House” occurred during one of my last nights spent in it. This happened in late February, right when emotions were running high and a year-and-a-half long relationship was ending (and a new one was blossoming). It was snowing outside, so I asked my fiance to please close the window (I am not a fan of sleeping in a cold environment, as he is). I watched him do so, and at 3am, being the only two in the house, we turned out all the lights and tried to go to sleep. An estimated ten to twenty minutes later, I distinctly heard giggling coming from another room in the house. This was not my imagination, nor was it children playing outside, as my rational mind raced to tell me that it was after all, the windows were closed, it was an early 3am Thursday morning, and we were the only two (human beings) in the house. I didn’t say anything about what I had just heard and neither did he; in fact, I was so freaked out by what had happened that I waited until he was completely moved out of the house to ask him if he had heard what I had, if it was not just my imagination. He confirmed that it was not, and to this day, I am thankful that I never have to set foot into that house ever again.

One night while camping in the woods outside of Parkersburg, it started to rain hard so my friend and I took refuge in an old train tunnel where we have spent a lot of time. While sitting in the dark waiting for the rain to let up, we started to hear noises behind us in the gravel as if someone were running down the tracks towards us.

Due to the batteries being low in our spotlights, we agreed to wait and let it get as close to us as possible before switching the lights on.

Standing there petrified in the pitch black darkness, listening to the sound of something running towards us without a light and never stumbling, and letting it get as close as we dared, which seemed to be right in front of us, we then switched our lights on at the same time… only to see nothing.

When the lights came on the sounds stopped and there was nothing there, so we looked at each other and did the only thing we could think of.

We ran!

Headless Man

I would like to tell you a story when I was about 10 or 11 years old. My baby cousin was only 5 years old at the time. He went to his friend’s house and was playing with her when he asked to go to the bathroom. His mom was there too. He went to the bathroom and stayed in there for a while. His mom went to check on him and he said that a man would not let him out! She said come on Caleb! He said mommy this man will not let me out! She said well tell him to let you out.

Then the door flew open as if someone had let him out. He was not touching the door. That night when they went home Caleb was sitting on the couch. He looked at his mommy and said mommy I did see a man and he would not let me out. Mommy, I saw him but he did not have a head! From this day, I believe my cousin saw the headless man. My two other cousins also said they saw it too. Their names are Joey Lawerence and Chris Blankenship. I will always think that he saw the man, but I have always wondered who it might be.

Dog-Walking Ghost

I live in Randolph County, and a few years ago, two friends of mine were going down Isner Creek road (near Elkins) late at night when they saw someone, presumably male, standing beside the road wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt. He was holding a dog’s leash, but they both said the dog was strange looking, somewhat there, but not there all at the same time. My friend who was the passenger also said even though there was light from the moon; she could not make out the person’s face, even though he was looking toward the road.

On their way back, about three hours later, the same figure was standing in the same spot holding the same dog’s leash. This time he was closer to the woods than the road, and the dog was so filmy and see-through that you could barely see him against the darkness of the woods.

They were both terrified and of course did not stop, but everyone thought it was extremely strange that the same person would still be in the same spot walking their dog three hours later, especially when there were no houses nearby. I ran into the same friend the other day, and she told me she was telling the story to one of her co-workers, and that he had seen the same figure on a few occasions. He also told her that this is a well-known ghost, and that no matter how hard you look, you can never make out his face under the hooded sweatshirt, even though he is always facing the road. I have since heard others claim to have also seen this dog-walking, faceless ghost along the road.

Patient Princess

In 1975, my mother purchased a partially burnt home in the Mount Hope area. Shortly after moving in, she realized that the children were not the only ones with her.

Princess was the previous owner of the property. She was murdered in the home. Some of the original items that belonged to Princess are in the home to this day.

By the time of my birth in 1977 mom had became accustomed to the everyday paranormal things. Lights turning on and off, sweet smells of perfume, catching that shadow out of the corner of your eye, and of course, the feeling of someone always watching you. My first experience came on an unusually dark night when I was 15. There had been a storm that shut down power to the whole town. My parents along with my to younger siblings and myself sat gathered in the living room. While working on a craft item by the light of a lantern, something caught my attention in the doorway to the kitchen. Although the only lights throughout the house were oil lamps and candles, I saw a woman waving at me. She was dressed in a beautiful white dress. It seemed to be something worn in the 1800s or early 1900s. It had a high collar and the sleeves were all the way to her wrists, her hair in a bun on her head. She wanted to tell me something or wanted me to acknowledge she was there but I could do nothing but burst into tears. My mom tried to tell me it would be ok and that I was not crazy. However, I believe that started a completely new chapter in my life.

Throughout the next few years I lived at home, I had numerous encounters with our Princess, and then more began to appear. Now its thirty years later and my childhood home is as active today as it was back then. We have several different ones that “live” among us. A small boy, two very different women, a man, and a crying baby.

My parents have accepted this as a normal life. Each time something new happens, it is like the very first encounter. I have tried to convince mom to have some research or investigation done on the house, but she always has the same reply “No they’re fine just the way they are”.

An Unexpected Meeting or Two

My name is Elisabeth and I live in Denmark. For the first time in my life, I went over the big pond to visit my sister Stephani, who lives in Parkersburg.

One day my cousin Stacey came around and took me on a tour in the older part of the city. It was a hot day, and without any air conditioning in the car, we were both rather hot when we reached Quincy Hill. I am very interested in history, so we both thought it would make a good start on the tour. I got out of the car and walked toward the “balcony” or lookout post at the top of the hill, and suddenly I had goose bumps all over me. I got a very odd feeling, as if I had walked straight through a door into a clammy room. I felt that we were definitely not alone there. Nothing happened to Stacey, who just looked at me and my goose bumps in amazement. I was baffled. Never did it occur to me that I would walk straight into a ghost.

However, the fun was not over. We went on to the old library, since we both love to read. While I was admiring the staircase that swings itself upwards, and snooping around for good books, I had the same feeling again. The feeling of being watched. Nobody but I and a couple of cats were around that section of the building. When I arrived back at my sisters, I was quite happy with the outcome of the tour of the city, and the encounters that I experienced in broad and sunny daylight!

I have read the book by Susan Sheppard (Cry of the Banshee) before coming over, but the names and places meant nothing to me until afterward, since there was so many other impressions that was swirling around in my head.

I have had quite a few encounters with spirits before, but I far from expected to literally run into a couple of them on my vacation!

Bright Light Over The Farm

It was the winter of 1999. My four kids and I were coming home late on a Wednesday night from Bible study. It was around 10 pm.

When we turned off of the main road, Rt. 60, onto our country road, we saw, off to the north, a bright light in the sky. It looked like a very bright star at first.

As we were going out our road, we would lose sight of it for a few seconds, and then as we would go around the twists and turns, we would see it again. Each time we would see it again, it was bigger and brighter. As we neared our home, some 3 miles off the main highway, there was a huge glowing ball of light. Not a little star looking light. It was hovering over the hillside, right behind our home. It looked like it had been descending down over the hills from space.

As I pulled down our long, steep driveway, we lost sight of it behind the trees. When I pulled to a stop, we noticed, our dogs were running around and around our mobile home. They were barking and howling.

I told the kids to quickly run for the door. I grabbed the youngest, and carried him as I ran. When we got to the door, as I was trying to unlock it, the dogs had pushed their way passed the kids, and as I opened the door, they pushed past me, and ran into the trailer.

Now, these dogs are outside dogs. They NEVER came into the house. For them to push their way in meant they were scared of something big. Real big. They ran into the kitchen and lay down on the floor. I tried to pull them up by their collars, but they would growl at me. That was also very bizarre behavior. They have never growled at us before or since.

I was too afraid to look outside. I don’t know when the thing went away. About an hour later, the dogs did let me put them back out.

A few weeks later, I saw in our local Charleston Newspaper “Ventline”, someone had called in asking if anyone had seen the big, bright light hovering over the hills at the back of the Hurricane/Culloden area (north of I-64) on that particular Wednesday night. I “vented” back saying they weren’t alone. It was hovering right over our hillside!

What Is That Jumping On The Trailer!

Late one night, just this past August (2005), we had an encounter that scared the whole family. For once, my husband was home to experience it.

It was around 11 pm, and I had just gone to bed from watching TV. My husband and the four older kids were still up watching TV in the living room.

All was quiet, and then all of a sudden, there was a loud crash sound right above my head. I thought for sure that a tree had fallen on top and was about to come through the roof. Whatever it was, hit so hard, it shook the trailer from one end to the other. After the loud crash sound, I heard something “slide” down the end of the trailer, right where my head was. I was thinking, a tree limb? Then I remembered there are no trees close enough to hit the trailer.

I jumped up out of bed and ran into the living room. They heard it too, they were looking around, and asking me what was that! The dogs were barking madly outside. My husband grabbed the only flashlight in the house. It was dead. (Oh, he was mad!) He threw on his shoes and ran out the door. I ran to the back door and went out on the deck. The dogs were still barking like crazy, looking toward the end of the trailer, where we heard a crash sound. There was not much light, since the back door light did not shine much out into the yard. My husband could not see anything; it was so dark, so he came inside.

The next morning we went outside and looked at the end of the trailer. There were no trees that had fallen or nothing else out of place.

Then, I went up into the house we were building, which stands two stories above the trailer. I could get a good look at the top to see if anything was out of the ordinary.

Sure enough, on the very end of the trailer roof, there are crumpled dents. It looks like something big had tried to jump up on top and grabbed the ends and crumpled one side. Those dents were not there the day before.

Dead Cow And Calf

Dead Cow and Calf

It was a hot August day in the year 2001 when my husband, Dave went looking for his cows who were about to give birth soon. The cows run loose on the farm, so when it is time for them to give birth, Dave will keep a good watch out for them. As soon as they have their calves, he will bring them to the barn.

On this particular hot day, while looking for his cows, he found one of them in the middle of giving birth, she was dead.

Now, this is really not unusual. We have lost cows before, during the birthing process if it is a very difficult birth. What was so unusual was the condition of the dead cow and calf.

Dave came off the hill to tell me what he found. He was a little confused about what had happened. You see, the cow had been strangled under a farm gate.

I went up on the hill a few hours later to see what he was talking about. I took a camera. It was a very eerie scene indeed. There was not one fly buzzing around the dead cow. Now, in the hot August heat, you would think there would be.

In addition, how in the world did she get her head UNDER the gate? The ground was hard as a rock, and the gate had no give to it at all. The kids and I had tried to pull the gate up, while still latched, to see if there was any movement at all. The gate did not budge. It looked as if something had opened the gate, put that cow’s head under it, closed and latched it back, strangling her.

We then walked around the back-end of her, and there was a calf, half in, half out. What we saw then was the creepiest of all.

It looked as if something had taken the face, and peeled it down off the skull, like a banana. One big piece. It looked as if something had taken a knife or something sharp and cleanly cut across the forehead of the calf then peeling off the face. It was not torn off, like if an animal was trying to eat it.

I have lived in this area all of my life except for the seven years I was in the army.

When I was eleven, I was playing hide and seek with my friends late at night in July of 82. I decided to go hide across the road at the neighbor’s yard. As I crossed the road I looked to the right of me under the streetlight, walking up the road was a headless man wearing what appeared to be an early 1800’s coachman outfit. By that time, my two dogs saw it and ran away. I believe that if it was someone dressed up they would have known and not ran away. I ran back up the hill screaming for my friends and by that time, every dog in the area was barking. When I stopped to see were it went, it vanished into the dark. I have no doubt that what I saw was not human but something EVIL.

It was the fall of 2003. Our 5th child, Hannah was just a few months old.

It was in the middle of the night, and I had my usual night bathroom visit. The bathroom door was just a few feet down the hallway from our bedroom door. I would keep the light on in the bathroom all night, so I could see Hannah, if she needed me, for a diaper change, or for a nursing. She was co-sleeping with me and my husband at the time. Our bedroom door was open half-way, to let some light in.

After my visit to the bathroom, I had laid back down in bed. I am very nearsighted (I didn’t have my glasses on), so what I saw next, was a blur. I looked out our door and saw a red glow in the hallway, right in front of the bathroom. My first thought was “FIRE!” Just as I was about to jump out of bed, this red smoky glow had floated into the bedroom, at the foot of our bed, around my husband’s side of the bed, and quickly went under the bed. As I lay there, watching this blurry glow, I got a real eerie feeling that it wanted Hannah. I put my arms around the baby, and I remember thinking “You are NOT getting her”. I fell asleep, chanting that over and over in my mind.

I don’t know what it was, but I do know I wasn’t dreaming. I was fully awake.
