Politician in a Mountain

I don't know if this is true or not, but in the town of Thurmond, WV (Fayette County). A long time ago when I was a kid playing with one of my friends who lived in the area, I was pointed out a "face" on the mountain across the railroad tracks and river. My friend's mother told me that the face was that of a politican, who was assassinated in Thurmond. At the very second of his death, an explosion somehow occured in the mountain and the shape of his face was carved into the mountain.
Like I said, I don't know if this is a true story or not, but you can clearly see the image in the mountain today, although it seems to be crumbling more and more as the years pass. My friend's mother might have just told us that to try to scare us a little.
