Haunting of 1012 Groveland

During the winter months of 1989 was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I had left my home in Roanoke, Virginia to visit with my parents at their home in Bluefield, West Virginia.

I was planning on staying with them for a few weeks and spend the christmas holidays with them. The house was rumored to be haunted by several former tenants and one tenant remarked that there had been violent poltergeist activity in the home.

My parents thought that this was a lot of bull crap, and did not take the warnings seriously. On the night of December 8,1989, I was in one of the three upstairs bedrooms lying in bed. I had just settled into bed and suddenly a strange clicking sound was coming from the right side corner of the room. Growing louder and louder.

I sat up and looked to the corner of the room and then heard a sound similar to that of a striking match! From the baseboards a brilliant blue/white ball appeared and hovered in the air for several moments, then the light hurled across the room to the bedroom door. Which was closed.

The entity paused for a moment, then went through the center of the door making a loud booming sound. So loud that it woke up everyone in the house. My mother and father, sister and brother-in-law came into the hallway and I told them what happened, everyone thought it was funny and dismissed it as a figment of my imagination!

That is to say, until later on that evening! Around 1:30am my brother-in-law awoke to see an oval image hovering above his bed, he described it as being oval in shape, and that it was blue in background, he stated while looking at this shape, the face of an older man appeared showing great detail, blue eyes, silver hair, smallnose, large ears. He stated that he heard no sounds emanating from it, but that it just hovered and kind of stared at him for several moments.

He got out of bed and said the image began to deteriorate and suddenly disappeared altogether. This scared the crap out of him. The following morning we discussed these events over breakfast. My father thought the whole thing was a joke and refused to believe his home was haunted.

Later on he would not laugh any longer! The next evening, my mother was cleaning the guestrooms upstairs when she heard a faint screeching sound coming from the bedroom where my brother-in-law and sister had been staying.

She opened the door to the bedroom and witnessed the same entity that my brother-in-law had seen the night before. She let out a yell for help that would curdle you're blood. When we all got upstairs, the entity had vanished.

Later in the evening the electricity kept going on and off in the house. My father called the power company and they sent a technician over to check out the power supply box. He found nothing wrong with the electrical systems and could not offer an explanation as to what was going on. In the kitchen area the microwave oven kept coming on by itself, with the timer set at 0:00 In both upstairs and downstairs bathrooms, toilets were flushing by themselves. I was truly convinced that this place was haunted.

Several weeks later, A tragedy occurred. One of my mothers closest friends, her next door neighbor, had died of cancer. My mother had to go to the house that day to run some errands, and when she returned home, at the top of the stairs, crisscrossed perfectly, were her black dress gloves, the type one would wear to a funeral. No one else could have placed these gloves there because Mom was completely alone in the house and had been for days. My father was in New york at the time on business!

Due to the many strange events that happened in the house, an investigator was hired to check out the history of the home. One astonishing piece of information we received was that there had been a questionable suicide in the home that happened about 4 years prior to my parents moving in.

We found out that a retired Air Force colonel had shot himself in the head in the garage area of the house. What was so strange about it was that one of the neighbors had been talking to him just moments before the shooting and stated that they had a normal conversation and that the colonel had appeared to be in good spirits that day. This neighbor believes that the colonels wife murdered him and staged a suicide theory for the police.

Many of the neighbors came forward to tell my parents that previous occupants of the home reported strange incidents, many of which were reported to police officials. My parents moved out of the home in 1992. It has remained unoccupied ever since, to this very day!
